Thursday afternoon, Jennifer Brooks interviewed me over the phone regarding Thompson’s campaign demise and where would Thompson supporters go now.
I explained to her what originally attracted me to Thompson in the first place and how I was trying to apply the same template to the candidates now currently in the race.
Federalism was a big attraction, strict adherence to the Constitutionally-granted powers to the federal government and when not explictly granted to the federal, should always default to the states.
I told her that is where I believe that social issues , (aka. abortion and gay marriage), should be politcally fought and decided. She quoted me ……
“In the end, he said, his concerns about taxes, fiscal policy and defense outweighed social issues such as gay marriage and abortion.”
That is not true, I will not vote for McCain because of the “Gang of 14″ which he was instrumental in forming in the Senate to inhibit the appointment of Constitutionally-restricted federal judges that would not write abortion and gay marriage law from the bench.
I told her that although Huckabee is against abortion and gay marriage…”AS I AM”…he prefers to fight it at the federal level with national laws and constitutional amendments that is inconsistant with strict Consistutional adherence.
This is a far cry from saying “social issues” are outwieghed by others in my decision making process.
Lesson learned…..”A conservative, always be very cogent and clear in everything you say to the press”.
Candidates descend on state and Nashville
Thompson’s former rivals court his fans

But so far, Thompson’s supporters don’t seem to be headed in any single direction, and they don’t always go for the candidate who might look like the best fit on paper.
“You’d think Huckabee as a social conservative would be really attractive to me,” said Truman Bean of Brentwood, one of the most committed Thompson fans out there. Not only did he volunteer and donate to the campaign, for months he maintained the “Tennesseans for Thompson” Web site.Today, he planned to go down to an early voting polling place and cast his vote for Romney. In the end, he said, his concerns about taxes, fiscal policy and defense outweighed social issues such as gay marriage and abortion.
When he polls his fellow Thompson supporters, Bean said he finds a mix of Romney, Huckabee and McCain supporters — just as there is nationally.
“I don’t have a clue right now, which way this is going to go,” he said. Meanwhile, he said he plans to ease into his new affiliation. “I’ll start to blog a little for Romney, help out a bit. It’ll take me a little time to warm up.”
