On April 12th and noon, there is a rally planned for Nashville, TN to show support for the FairTax. I hope that most of you know of the FairTax and support it. The website for the rally is www.nationalfreedomrally.com and if you have any questions, you can email me. There will be a “road rally” meetup at the Knoxville Expo Center that morning. We plan on leaving Knoxville by 9:30 am. I would like to carpool with someone, given the high price of gas.

I’m a little confused about the Fair Tax. I know we need to have a complete overhaul on the tax system, but wouldn’t a fair tax make the price of a car, for example, pretty much make a car out of range for your average person? How would this affect the retail industry? (serious question, btw)

For a variety of reasons, no. The short version is as follows:
In the case of used cars, the tax doesn’t apply. It’s only a tax on new goods and services.
In the case of new cars, the amount the Fair Tax increases the price of the car is offset by the corresponding drop in the cost to manufacture the car as the embedded costs of our current tax code are gone.
The price of the car is unlikely to change very much at all as the increase is the same as the reduction.
It’s a bit more complex than that but not much. Read Boortz and Linder’s book if you are interested. Personally, I think it’s the best idea out there at the moment.
