Guns in bars and the magical powers of the TCA

Critics of the guns-in-bars bill passed this past year seem adamant in their belief that only the text of a TCA statute has kept us safe from wild west shootouts in Printer’s Alley for lo-these-many-years.

Given the mystical powers of TCA to inhibit the behavior of gun-totin-redneck-evil-doers, I believe I can offer some reassurance to the timid and fearful denizens of the left side of the blogo-politico-sphere peering in over the bar-room doors.

There’s still two TCA statutes with magical powers that you can rely on.

One: It’s illegal for anybody carrying a firearm to drink any alcohol in a restaurant or bar. So, the same magical powers that have prevented evil-doers from carrying a firearm into a restaurant in the past will still be there to protect you from anybody with a firearm even approaching .08 blood alcohol levels.

Two: It’s illegal to shoot people. I mean, in the past, the law has protected people by keeping the bad guys from carrying firearms into a restaurant or bar - why won’t that same law still keep them from shootin’ people?

What’s that you say? Folks with bad intent might shoot somebody in a restaurant or bar, in spite of the law?

What makes you think the bad guys haven’t been carrying firearms into restaurants and bars in the past in spite of the ban that was just overturned?

[cue crickets]

You can’t stop people from carrying firearms into bars (or parks for that matter). You can only disarm the responsible law-abiding citizens, so they won’t be able to defend themselves.

Do they even bother to teach logic in schools anymore?

There are some common sense gun laws, like not letting hard core criminals buy them freely, but in general the laws don’t prevent the abuse of guns, they only restrict law abiding people from obtaining and using them.

Owning a gun comes with great responsibility. Guns are for protection and should be used responsibly. Great article by the way.
